A shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania Saturday evening, is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president, according to an Associated Press report

Trump’s campaign reported that he is “fine” after the incident, which left him with a wound to the upper part of his right ear. “I knew immediately that something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place,” Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.

The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was killed by Secret Service agents after opening fire from an elevated position outside the rally venue. One attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured during the chaos.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, recovered an AR-style rifle at the scene. Analysis of videos and photos from the rally showed that the shooter managed to get alarmingly close to the stage where Trump was speaking.

President Joe Biden condemned the violence, stating, “There’s no place in America for this type of violence. It’s sick.” Biden, who spoke to Trump several hours after the shooting, planned to cut short his weekend at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to return to Washington for further briefings.

Trump’s protective detail was visibly reinforced as he landed in New Jersey after the rally, showing a strong show of force by Secret Service agents and members of the counterassault team.

Several prominent Republicans, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, quickly expressed concern for Trump. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also condemned the violence, stating, “Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable. It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned the act on social media, stating, “This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned.”

Donald Trump Jr. shared that he spoke to his father, who is “in great spirits.” He remarked, “He will never stop fighting to save America, no matter what the radical left throws at him.”
