Diving Deeper:

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll reveals that a significant majority of registered voters, including a substantial portion of Hispanic voters, support a national program to deport illegal aliens from the United States. According to the poll, 62% of registered voters back a comprehensive deportation program, while 38% oppose it. This support spans across political affiliations, with 88% of Republicans, 60% of independents, and 38% of Democrats in favor of such measures.

The poll also highlights that 53% of Hispanic respondents support the deportation program, with 47% against it. This indicates a nuanced perspective within the Hispanic community, often viewed as monolithically opposed to strict immigration policies.

Former President Donald Trump, a strong advocate for mass deportation, has recently reiterated his commitment to this approach. Last September, Trump promised to execute "the largest domestic deportation operation in American history" if re-elected. Speaking in Phoenix, he contrasted his stance with President Biden’s, stating, “I want deportation, while Biden wants an invasion.”

The poll further explores public opinion on empowering local law enforcement to identify illegal aliens. A significant 62% of respondents support local police efforts to distinguish U.S. citizens from undocumented immigrants. This support includes majorities of Republicans (84%) and independents (57%), along with 57% of Hispanic respondents and nearly half of Democrats (45%).

Voter sentiment is divided on the establishment of large detention centers to hold individuals while determining their deportation status. While 52% of respondents oppose such centers, 48% support them. Hispanics are evenly split on this issue, and a majority of independents (56%) are against the idea.

The poll, conducted from June 5-7, sampled 1,615 registered voters with a margin of error of ± 3.8 percentage points.
