Quick Hit:

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a $2.4 billion budget for migrant care, alongside plans to stimulate residential development in the state. This comes amidst the ongoing migrant crisis and the state's high rent and home prices.

Key Details:

  • Hochul's proposed budget includes an additional $2.4 billion for migrant care, on top of the $1.9 billion spent in 2023.
  • A significant portion of this budget is allocated for New York City, where Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams have agreed to spend $1.1 billion for illegal border crossers.
  • Hochul also plans to encourage more residential construction, in response to the state's high rent and home prices.

Diving Deeper:

Gov. Hochul released her budget proposal on Tuesday, addressing the pressures facing New York, one of which is the ongoing migrant crisis under President Joe Biden's administration. The proposed $2.4 billion for migrant care is in addition to the $1.9 billion the state spent in 2023, according to Politico. A large portion of this new spending is targeted for New York City, where Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams have agreed to spend $1.1 billion for the illegal border crossers that have flocked to the Big Apple.

Alongside this, Hochul announced plans to spur more residential construction. "We still need an effective statewide approach to encourage new construction," Hochul said in her budget speech. This comes as New York City leads the nation with the highest rent prices, with the city's rent being nearly $1,000 a month higher than the second highest city.

However, Hochul's transparency has been questioned, with the Boston Herald recently asking the state to provide a full accounting of where all the money is going. This comes as the state continues to provide extensive freebies to illegal immigrants, including housing, food, clothing, rent, and many more expenditures.
