Amazon will require its employees to return to the office five days a week starting January 2, 2025, according to an announcement by CEO Andy Jassy on Monday. The move marks a significant shift from the hybrid work model that has become a preferred option for many American workers post-pandemic.

“When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant,” Jassy stated in a recent note to employees. He emphasized that teams working regularly in-person have demonstrated greater collaboration, connection, and innovation. "If anything, the last 15 months we've been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits," he added.

The decision has already drawn scrutiny from Amazon's workforce. Last year, about 10% of Amazon's employees signed a petition against the company's three-day office policy, indicating a potential pushback against the more stringent five-day requirement. Nevertheless, Jassy, who has been vocal about his preference for in-person work, maintains that the change is necessary to maintain Amazon's competitive edge.

Acknowledging potential challenges for some employees, Jassy mentioned that those with "extenuating circumstances" or specific exceptions might still have the opportunity to work remotely or in a hybrid capacity. "We understand that some of our teammates may have set up their personal lives in such a way that returning to the office consistently five days per week will require some adjustments," he noted.

A report by Morning Consult in April found that most workers favored hybrid work arrangements after years of working remotely. Additionally, nationwide office foot traffic reached its highest level since July 2019, signaling a slow return to pre-pandemic work norms.

In conjunction with the new office mandate, Amazon plans to reconfigure its corporate structure by reducing the number of managers. Jassy announced that by the end of March, senior leadership teams would increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by at least 15%.
